CCTV captures drug user stealing child’s bike from a store in Derbyshire

The store’s CCTV footage shows McAllister stealing the 12-year-old boy’s bicycle

A 12 year-old boy’s bicycle was stolen from outside a supermarket in Derbyshire by a drug user who took the bike to sell in order to fund his habit. Unlucky for him though, CCTV footage taken by the store shows the drug user taking the boys’ bike.

Father of one, Keiron McAllister, took the boy’s £200 bicycle from outside the Sainsbury’s supermarket in Civic Way, Swadlincote where it was tied up. He then drove off on the bike. The young boy had rode his bicycle to the store and had tied it up securely at 3.45pm.

Another male was seen with McAllister removing the boy’s bicycle from the storage pole. One of them then rides off on the bike.

Officers recognised McAllister after watching CCTV footage that was captured via the store’s CCTV system, Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court heard.

The police went to McAllister’s home but the bike was nowhere to be found. He admitted to stealing it but said he’d sold it for £20. He apologised and said that he could try and get the bike back.

The theft took place on July 23, only five days before he went on to commit a shoplifting offence in which he was caught and given a community order.

Judge Jonathan Taaffe gave McAllister a new community order for six weeks, with curfew.

“A few days after you nicked this kids bike you decided to go out shoplifting,” said the Judge.

The CCTV footage from the store identified McAllister as the thief and during his interview he admits that he’s the one in the CCTV footage. McAllister pleads guilty to theft.

McAllister was ordered by Judge Taaffe to pay costs of £85, plus an £85 victim surcharge and had to pay £200 to the young boy whose bicycle he stole.

Nuneaton station introduced new cycle stands and a special public bicycle tool station recently and the two new cameras are a welcome addition to the new facilities being put in place at the station.

The new CCTV cameras have been paid out of Warwickshire County councillor, Keith Kondakor’s councillor’s budget, however the cameras are owned by Network Rail.

Councillor Kondakor has been pushing for security improvements at the station for cyclists using the trains and hopes the new cameras and other new facilities will encourage more locals to get cycling.

Deputy leader at Shire Hall and cabinet member for planning and transport, Councillor Peter Butlin, said that the two new cameras installed at the station are part of recent investments into making bicycle facilities at the station better for train users and to help boost the use of cycles, which Warwickshire County Council is keen to push.

Councillor Butlin went on to thank Cllr Kondakor for spending £12,000 of his budget on improvements at Nuneaton station. He also thanked London Midland for their enthusiasm in working together on the project.

“I hope the new cameras will deter potential bike thieves at the rail station,” added Councillor Butlin.
